Why I’ll Still Be Clapping For Your Stories

Can I get a show of hands?

So there’s been a lot of talk about the new payment program here at Medium. Some of it has been good, some bad, but it’s been showing up on my timeline constantly since it’s announcement. I’m not sure it’s going to be a good thing for everyone, but I’m taking it with a grain of salt. I’m still going to be a member here and I’m still going to write what feels entertaining to me. But most importantly, I’m still going to clap for the stories that grasp my attention and keep me reading to the end.

The biggest thing I’ve gotten from the whole change over is that we writers will no longer be able to rely on the number of claps our stories get in order to make our money. I’m okay with that. I never made a ton of money on Medium anyway, but it got me back into the writing game. For that alone, I am eternally grateful. But there was always just something about seeing those little clapping hands that made me feel, well, special.

I may be the only writer on the entire site who feels this way, but I appreciated those claps. Not because I thought they might turn into dollars, but because I could see that someone was out there reading my work and saw fit to show me that they appreciated it. I feel that this is something that will still keep small-time writers, like myself, going when they feel like giving…
